Abstract

This paper explores the legal recognition of non-traditional family structures from a global perspective, highlighting the urgent need to address the gap between evolving family forms and existing legal frameworks. It investigates how diverse family configurations—such as single-parent, same-sex, cohabiting families, and others—are recognized and treated under various jurisdictions. The study underscores the fluidity of family definitions in contemporary society, challenging traditional notions that have historically dominated legal discourse. As societal norms shift, the legal system often lags behind, creating challenges for families seeking recognition and rights. The paper also examines the historical evolution of family law, noting significant changes driven by social, cultural, and political factors. International legal frameworks, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and various treaties, are analyzed for their role in promoting family diversity while balancing traditional family models. Despite advancements, resistance rooted in cultural and religious norms persists, often leading to inconsistent legal interpretations and protections. The findings advocate for greater legal reforms to ensure that the rights of all family structures are recognized and upheld, emphasizing the necessity for ongoing dialogue and cooperation among nations.
